MANCHESTER UNITED are plotting to sign Jorginho from Napoli to fill the role in central midfield.
Jose Mourinho is said to have made the position a priority for the summer transfer window.
The manager outlined this week he feels his attack is now complete following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.
As a result, there will be more attention paid to midfield, with Marouane Fellaini’s contract expiring and Michael Carrick retiring.
The United legend is set to turn to coaching, and Jorginho is wanted by Mourinho.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the 26-year-old Italy international has been shortlisted by the Red Devils boss.
While Mourinho expects Carrick to hang up his boots, it is claimed the veteran could surprise United as he has not definitively decided to retire.
Whether the former Tottenham and West Ham man extends his deal into next season now remains to be seen.
But looking long term, Jorginho could still come in and offer experience to younger players like Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
The Manchester Evening News add Napoli’s No.8 is on a three-man list to specifically replace Carrick.
Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl has been scouted, while Fred’s representatives would also welcome an approach with Manchester City currently confident of landing the Shakhtar Donetsk star.
Jorginho, though, appears to be the player generating the greatest interest for Manchester United.
He is contracted at Napoli until 2020.
