Toby Alderweireld is hoping to win the league with Tottenham this season after a move to Manchester United failed to materialise during the summer transfer window.
The centre-back was on a list of targets wanted by Jose Mourinho during the summer, but a failure to agree on a fee means that he is staying at Spurs, for now at least.
Spurs got their new campaign underway with a win against Newcastle but Alderweireld had to settle for a place on the bench at St James’ Park.
After the win the 29-year-old took to social media and tweeted: “First game, first win! Let’s go and win the title in our new stadium.”
Mauricio Pochettino chose Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez for their opening game of the season and Alderweireld tweeted his support of his team-mates after he scored Spurs’ first goal.
Vertonghen jokingly tweed: ‘Golden boot hunt under way,’ after goal line technology awarded him the first goal of the game.
And Alderweireld tweeted his approval when he replied: ‘Good luck Jan’ along with a winking emoji.
It is believed that United did have the funds to sign ‘top, top players’ this summer and were ready to spend £100million if a player of the right quality had become available.
United considered a host of centre-backs in the transfer window, including Alderweireld, Leicester’s Harry Maguire, Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina of Barcelona.
And it is understood Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy contacted United about the possibility of signing Anthony Martial and Juan Mata this summer and United attempted to negotiate an Alderweireld compromise through intermediaries but failed before the deadline.
