Athletic Bilbao are ready to make Ander Herrera the highest paid player at the club in order to convince him to quit Manchester United.
The Spaniard left the club in 2014 to join Manchester United in a deal worth £29million but Herrera is out of contract at the end of the season.
The midfielder had hoped to stay at Old Trafford but the Red Devils are yet to make him an offer and Herrera will consider his options in January if his exile from the first team continues.
According to the Daily Mail, Bilbao want to re-sign Herrera and are willing to make him the highest paid player at the club to return.
Bilbao were keen on signing Herrera last summer but Mourinho was reluctant to let him go as he had a shortage of midfielders due to the World Cup.
Herrera’s preference had been to remain at the club but like team-mate and close friend Juan Mata he is yet to be offered new terms.
Luke Shaw is in the same boat as the Spanish pair but United are keen on retaining in the left-back and will hold talks with his representatives over the New Year.
The former Southampton man is keen on having a prolonged period in Mourinho’s starting XI before making any decisions about his long-term future at the club.
