Jose Mourinho was rewarded for bringing back Anthony Martial on Saturday as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-2.
Martial, who started on the bench for last week’s game against Valencia in the Champions League, returned to the starting line-up and scored the all-important equaliser in the 76th minute.
A neat exchange with Paul Pogba saw the Frenchman dart into the box and fire past Martin Dubravka with a tidy finish.
Mourinho explained Martial’s return in his pre-match press conference: “Anthony, in the last match for 15 minutes [against Valencia], was alive.
“There is a good connection between him and the fans here at home. They can push him.”
It’s been three years since United splashed £36m to sign Martial from Monaco but in that time the young Frenchman has only shown glimpses of his talent.
Mourinho has made his frustrations very clear by regularly slamming Martial in the press and dropping him for big games.
United fans, however, adore the 22-year-old and think he’s a huge talent, which is why the Daily Mail’s latest report will be of particular interest to them.
The report states that Martial is so confident Mourinho won’t last at United that he’s recently shown he’s prepared to discuss a new contract with the club.
He looked set to leave in the summer but now, with Mourinho’s situation as manager worsening, Martial appears to have had a change of heart.
“Martial’s willingness to discuss a new contract in recent weeks is thought to be on the basis that he believes the Portuguese coach will not be at United much longer,” writes Chris Wheeler.
That’s great news where United fans are concerned, but there’s a good chance Mourinho won’t be happy when he hears why Martial is suddenly interested in extending his stay.
The winger can probably expect even less game time going forward.
