Pundit explains why David de Gea won’t leave Manchester United

Former Arsenal forward Paul Mariner is adamant David de Gea will not leave Manchester United in the near future.

The Spaniard was moments away from becoming a Real Madrid player back in 2015 only for the move to fall through on deadline day amid documentation issues and something involving a Windows update.

He has since cemented himself as the best in the world at Man United, but a recent report in the Telegraph claimed the club would seriously struggle to keep De Gea beyond his current contract, which ends in June 2020, because he does not believe the team can compete for major trophies over the next few years.

But Mariner, speaking earlier this week, noted that he could not see any move happening.

“I just don’t understand this,” he said. “[Thibaut] Courtois is at Real Madrid, sitting on his backside, and everyone else is set with their goalkeepers.”

“I just cannot see this [happening].”

The fact that every top team, including Real Madrid, is currently “set” with their goalkeepers does not mean De Gea is going to stay put.

A lot can happen between now and June 2020 – the end of next season – and United need to work hard and smart over this season to avoid letting one of their best ever keepers walk out for nothing. As supporters have constantly said, United should give De Gea what he wants.
