Reported Manchester United target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic admits he was pleased Jose Mourinho was in attendance for Serbia’s clash against Montenegro.
The United manager was spotted at the Nations League game as Serbia ran out 2-0 winners, and reports claim he was there to scout Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.
United were heavily linked with Milinkovic-Savic during the summer months and a report in The Sun claims Mourinho was mainly at the game to watch the 23-year-old.
And the midfielder, who only played for 11 minutes in the win but set up Aleksandar Mitrovic’s goal, was asked about Mourinho’s presence at the game.
“I’m a Lazio player, but it’s obvious that I was pleased that a coach of his stature came to see the game,” Milinković-Savic said.
“I read a little bit everywhere he was here at the stadium to see me play, but that does not mean anything. Maybe he was not here for me, but for someone else.”
Nemanja Matic was in line to be involved in the game but has returned back to Manchester having picked up an injury earlier in the week.
The United midfielder is back at Carrington to focus on recovery on a back injury ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend.
The Serbian is the second United player to withdraw from international duty through injury. Luke Shaw pulled out of the England squad with a knock he picked up in the game against Newcastle.
