Wednesday night was one of Manchester United’s finest nights in the Champions League for quite some time.
After falling a goal down to Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning strike, Jose Mourinho’s side staged a remarkable fightback to win a game that had looked lost.
Juan Mata’s free-kick and Leonardo Bonucci’s own goal completed the turnaround and put United on the brink of the last-16, and left Ronaldo eating a fairly big batch of humble pie.
The Portuguese had celebrated his goal by flashing his abs to the crowd as he lifted his shirt, and he criticised his former club after a game he says they didn’t deserve to win.
“I was happy with the goal but we are disappointed because we should win the game easily, by three or four goals,” he told Danish outlet Viasport after the match.
“Manchester didn’t do much, they created two chances from set pieces. English teams are always looking for set pieces.
“But we will learn from our mistakes and we are still top of the group and we are good.”
Yeah, you sound it Cris.
But while United fans have been busy mocking their former star for what he said , United’s players have been basking in the glow of the victory.
And one of those players is Jesse Lingard.
The midfielder played for 70 minutes of the game in Turin, working hard on the right hand side of his team’s attack before he was replaced by Marcus Rashford.
There is a famous image of a young Lingard and Ronaldo from the Portuguese’s time at Old Trafford that United fans like to circulate on social media, but Lingard shared another one on his Instagram account on Thursday afternoon.
The England man showed a picture of Ronaldo’s celebration alongside himself topless, and asked ‘who did it better?’
On the pitch it was United who did on Wednesday, at least in the last five minutes.
