Manchester United star Ander Herrera has dismissed claims that he criticised team-mate Paul Pogba on Instagram and instead claimed that the Frenchman ‘is the best midfielder in the world by far’.
Pogba has endured a difficult season so far, attracting a considerable amount of criticism for some of his performances.
Some United fans thought that Herrera criticised Pogba on Instagram.
Herrera posted a video of himself and goalkeeper David De Gea performing skills during training and was asked by one fan why he doesn’t do that in matches.
The Spaniard responded by saying: ‘Because unless you are a striker or a winger, that’s absolutely useless.’
With Pogba being a midfielder and having a penchant for showboating at times, some fans believed that Herrera was making a reference to Pogba.
Herrera, however, was eager to point out that wasn’t the case. He replied to the comment, stating: ‘Never! In terms of qualities and possibilities, he is the best midfielder in the world by far,’ Herrera said.
‘He is probably the only one that can do that being effective for the team.’
Pogba only featured as a substitute during United’s 1-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League in midweek.
The 25-year-old will hope to play a more prominent part when United return to Premier League action on Saturday evening with an away game against Southampton.
United have much work to do as they look to improve following a concerning commencement to the campaign.
Jose Mourinho’s side are currently in seventh place in the table, 14 points adrift of leaders and rivals Manchester City.
