David de Gea has appeared to endorse Jose Mourinho’s comments surrounding his Manchester United future as the club look to secure the goalkeeper on a new deal.
The club triggered a one-year extension to De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford yesterday and Mourinho insisted in his pre-Southampton press conference that the club, and goalkeeper, are eager to agree new terms.
De Gea, 28, has won the club’s player of the year award in four of the past five seasons and has blossomed into one of the finest goalkeepers in the world since his £18 million arrival from Atlético Madrid in 2011.
United have been looking to agree a new deal with De Gea for some time and Mourinho said he expects negotiations to be concluded without issue.
We have the best goalkeeper in the world,” Mourinho said.
“Obviously the manager wants him to stay, the board wants him to stay and David wants to stay.
“He wants to stay I want him to stay of course, he’s the level of player Manchester United needs.
“Manchester United needs the best players in the world, if we want to be Manchester United we need the best player in the world.”
United posted the quotes along with a picture of De Gea on their Instagram account, with De Gea’s verified account liking the post.
