Man Utd news: Sir Alex Ferguson ‘keen’ on board choice to replace Jose Mourinho

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on his former club’s board to replace Jose Mourinho with Mauricio Pochettino, according to reports.

The Red Devils have gone through a season of hell so far after finding themselves eighth in the Premier League.

They are without a league win in four games and have managed just four wins at Old Trafford all season.

Mourinho has come under huge pressure in recent months, with many reports revealing that his time will come to an end at the end of the season if they do not achieve Champions League football.

There have been problems on and off the pitch, with players falling out with the manager nearly every other week.

Key figures such as Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial are just some to mention that have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

And United chief is ready to pull the plug – as long as he gets his man.

According to The Sun, Tottenham manager Pochettino is the former banker’s first and only choice to come in.

The Argentinean has been hugely impressive with his work at Spurs and Southampton since arriving in England, despite his lack of trophies.

Players adore him, his tactics are progressive and has been able to maximise his resources in spite of a lack of financial backing in the summer from Daniel Levy.

And The Sun go on to report that Sir Alex Ferguson had been sent to have lunch with the former Espanyol coach and more than got on with the 46-year-old.

The legendary Scotsman is happy for Pochettino to come in and fill the position should Mourinho be given the sack.

However, the ex-Chelsea manager’s agent Jorge Mendes has come out with a rare statement on his client’s future in light of the reports.

He said: “There have been more rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester United. It’s totally untrue.

“Jose is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him.

“He has a long-term contract with Manchester United and is fully committed to the club in building a solid winning project.”
